Cows

As of July 2021, we no longer have any cows. When we had several people interested in Claire, we also had a few offers to buy Sorbet. After 3 months of consideration, we made the hard decision to sell Sorbet and Holly and take a break from cows while we get a little more infrastructure set up on the farm and spend our time finishing out the farmhouse and outbuildings. The boys are sad to see the cows go and will miss the farm-fresh milk, but we do feel it was the right choice for our family and farm for this season.

We do have 4 straws of Lowline semen available for sale:

EZ Bojack 12Z is a sound footed, structurally correct, long bodied bull. His genetics not only excel in calving ease on first calf heifers and strong maternal traits like milk production and very high quality udders and fertility, they are also among the Lowline breeds best for the carcass traits of tenderness, Marbling and exceptional rib eye area per hundredweight. Bojack daughters are a low maintenance cost replacement females to improve your ranch efficiency and produce more pounds of weaning weight per acre! $46/straw and are stored with our bovine vet in Northwest Arkansas.

Please contact us at katie.ann.rogers@gmail.com to ask any questions or inquire about any of our stock for sale.

We keep and breed crossbred miniature cows. Their heritage includes Miniature Jersey, Lowline Angus, and Dexter. By using crossbred cows, we are able to select for traits we want and improve upon each cow's weaker traits with each generation we produce. It also allows us to produce calves suitable as a dairy cow, but also for quality beef production. We do not sell cows to homes where they will not be kept with at least one other cow.

Our cows are grassfed and supplemented with hay in the winter months. They are grazed using a rotational system, and rotated to other areas of the farm when we need to let the grass rest. This winter we used them to establish some topsoil along a very poorly draining clay base area in front of our barn. By feeding round bales along that area, we have been able to establish a good 6-8 inches of material that will compost into soil suitable for growing grass. We are about to enter our first season using our cows to help clear underbrush from a wooded part of our property as a phase one plan to turn that area into valuable silvopasture.

We hand milk our cows, and utilize a calf-share program which allows us to milk on days when we want to, but does not keep us tied to milking every day or twice a day, nor do we have to worry about bottle feeding calves. By calf-sharing, we can get around one to one and a quarter gallons of milk each day, which is perfect for a small family. We separate the calf the afternoon before and milk in the morning before reuniting the cow and calf for the rest of the day. Under the "Cows" tab in the menu above, you will find a brief introduction to various aspects of our approach to keeping a family milk cow.

Sorbet Peony

SOLD

"Sorbet" is a Jey-Low Cross: ¾ Miniature Jersey, ¼ Lowline Angus. She's 42" at the hip and naturally homozygous polled. Sorbet is our friendliest cow and we adore her. She was born in 2010 and has had lots of beautiful calves. She is our herd matriarch and has been the perfect first cow for us as she is so gentle and easy to handle. We made the hard decision early summer 2021 to sell Sorbet to an amazing family where she will be loved and brushed and milked. This will be her third family to get started with a family milk cow and she is a wonderful cow for the job. She will be staying local where we can still go and visit her and her calves.

She is an excellent mother and produces milk with a high cream content that's also high in beta carotene, giving it a lovely golden color.

Sorbet was bred by our bull calf Rocky in February 2021 and their December calf will be 5/8 Miniature Jersey, 1/8 Dexter, 1/16 Lowline, 1/16 Angus, and 1/16 Jersey. We are excited to see this cross with a diverse genetic pool and a unique combination of both milk and meat traits as well as grazing efficiency and energy conversion.

She is a great mother, is very sweet and willing, has excellent udder structure and produces nice, highfat milk that is great for cheese making, showing off both her dexter and jersey heritage.

Claire is bred to EZ BOJACK for a half Lowline Angus calf in October 2021. Bojack should improve weight gain and carcass traits for Claire's offspring without sacrificing milking qualities.
